La danse a Bougival: Renoir 1883

Pierre-Auguste Renoir 146.jpg

This is a series of three paintings
each in a different setting but both
depicting a dance, which if truly is
in an ideal world should be based
much in the principles of what
constitutes a lady or gentlemen.
Courtesy, thoughtfulness, and respect.

  1. Do you think its the same couple in all three paintings or different in each?

  2. I believe that the guy was a friend of Renoir's, the lady in the city was a model, and the lady dancing in the country was actually his lover and future wife, while its commonly believed the women in Bougival was a combination of his future wife and the model he painted in the city. so in a strange way yes they were the same couple at least in partiality. He had fun with it, and it was a reflection of something middle class people did back then for fun so its kind of interesting to see how its shifted a bit as time's progressed, although it still exists as it once did.
